After a storm wreaks havoc on your home and your property you have a laundry list of things to consider but you might not even be fully aware of what they are or how much time you have to make very important decisions. Having personally lived through a tornado ripping through my own neighborhood and seeing multiple significant events since then, I come to you with some simple tips and suggestions. The Dallas storm damage reminds me of the tornado just after Christmas in 2015 in the Waxahachie and southern Dallas area. I do not like telling people what they “should” do but I also believe that it is important for them to know their various options.
First, and foremost, ensure that you and all of your loved ones including the 4 legged type are all safe and secure. After you have ensured their safety and security it is time to start working through the difficulty of dealing with your property from the Dallas storm damage.
Call your insurance company and file a claim if you have visible damage to your home or property. Upon calling in your claim they should follow up with you for an adjuster to visit your home. There will no doubt be a village of roofing and restoration companies trolling through your neighborhood… You don’t have to sign anything with anyone! If you have exposure to the elements your insurance company will authorize you to secure your home with tarps or wrapping exposed walls etc. Just because you pick a company to do a temporary repair does not mean that you need to be locked in to work with them through the entire restoration process. Just know that you should be allotted money in your claim to pay for their services and then you can select your permanent contractor and proceed with restoring your property.
During the time it takes for your insurance adjuster to come out this is a good time to meet with prospective contractors to repair your home. Some simple tips for homeowners… Ask as many questions as you can! You’re essentially inviting a company into your home and you will be dealing with them for a good amount of time on a sizable project on your number one asset. After the Dallas storm damage hit your property there are plenty of contractors but the good ones will be willing to answer your questions.
Sample Question to ask:
- How long have you been in business?
- Have you performed work on this type of storm damage?
- Are you local?
- Are you insured?
- Are you backed by any manufacturers?
- Do you have verified reviews?
- How many jobs of this magnitude have you completed?
- Do you have any references?
- Will you walk my project with me and explain what needs to be done?
- What is the time frame for completing the job?
After you have your claim estimate from your insurance adjuster to repair your storm damage you will be ready to walk the job with your chosen contractor and possibly your insurance adjuster as well. Always remember through the whole process that questions are welcomed and generally will clear up any misunderstandings between you and all related parties. You don’t have to jump to any rash decisions. Always take time and make a decision that is right for you and your family.
